In January 2009, City at Peace-New York proudly presented its ninth original musical, “UNDER THE LIGHTS.” This show was created by the young people in the cast from their own life experiences and their ideas for change around the most serious conflicts they face.
The narrator of the show is a dancer coming to New York to fulfill her dreams. Using photographs of New York City’s past as a backdrop, the narrator sets out to create a dance piece that captures New York. She comes to discover that, like New York City, our pasts are part of who we are but they are not all of who we are. And that like in New York City which has always been where the past and future meet, we as young people must shine a light on the past, recognize it for what it is, and then step forward to the future.
