About The Show

A young poet struggling with loss.  A family in a new country. Two friends in a new school.  Two siblings in a troubled home.   A young woman confronting her past.  What happens when you are pulled in more than one direction?  What happens when you have lost what you love most?   What happens when the past and the present, then and now, here and there collide?  A young poet, Will, and his best friend, Terry, lead us on a journey to distant places, the forgotten past, and all too real present that they and other young people face.  Torn by the conditions of their lives and the choices they must make, they hope to learn what it takes to create the life they want to live.

CP-NY’s Newest Original Musical

January 10, 2009

CP-NY presents “Under the Lights” January 28, 29, 30, and 31.

City at Peace-New York is proud to present the After School Cast’s show “UNDER THE LIGHTS”. This show is created by the young people in the cast from their own life experiences and their ideas for change around the most serious conflicts they face. The narrator of the show is a dancer coming to New York to fulfill her dreams. Using photographs of New York City’s past as a backdrop, the narrator sets out to create a dance piece that captures New York. She comes to discover that, like New York City, our pasts are part of who we are but they are not all of who we are. And that like in New York City which has always been where the past and future meet, we as young people must shine a light on the past, recognize it for what it is, and then step forward to the future.

At the very heart of City at Peace are ordinary teenagers achieving extraordinary things. Over the years in many shows, these teenagers, working in collaboration with professional artists and musicians, have created dozens of original musical compositions, articulating the sometimes difficult reality they face and their remarkable spirit for the future.

This year on one weekend, City at Peace brought together a group of teenagers from City at Peace programs in four different cities - New York, Los Angeles, Charlotte, and Baton Rouge. They gathered together as a national chorus to rehearse and record a compilation of City at Peace songs from past shows. Each song comes from one of the original musicals written and performed by City at Peace teenagers over the last four years. All of the lyrics were written by the youth cast members themselves or come from their writings or ideas.
